The ordination of deacon Daniel Wanna.

WITH THE BLESSING OF THE MOST HOLY PATRIARCH OF MOSCOW AND ALL RUSSIA KIRILL, on June 05, 2009, on Sunday at the church of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity at Horoshevo (Moscow) deacon of St. Nicholas' Chapel in Bangkok Daniel (Danai) Wanna will be ordained as a priest. The sacrament will be performed by the vicar of the Most Holy Patriarch, bishop Egorievsky Mark. The Divine Liturgy, followed by Daniel's ordination, will start at 9.00 AM.

Reception at Russian Embassy.

On Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russian Federation in the Kingdom of Thailand Mr. E.V. Afanasiev's invitation, Representative of Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) in Thailand hegumen Oleg (Cherepanin) attended a diplomatic reception on the occasion of Russia's Independence Day. During the reception hegumen Oleg had an informal conversation with employees of the Russian Embassy, as well as diplomats from other countries accredited in Bangkok. In addition, Russian Orthodox Church Representative discussed some questions of the Orthodox community's social activity in the Kingdom with Thai officials who were present at the reception.

Public prayer before the beginning of chapel construction in Pattaya.

Representative of Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) in Thailand visited the city of Pattaya (Chonburi province), where construction works had begun on Church in the Name of All Saints' and held a public prayer directly at the building site. During the prayer, besides the Orthodox believers, the whole team of Thai constructors was present. The construction of Orthodox chapel in Pattaya is planned to be finished this December.

Progress of construction works on Phuket.

In the day of Holy Trinity, patronal feast of Orthodox believers on Phuket, deacon Daniel (Wanna) conducted divine service in secular order.

Fr. Daniel is currently on business trip to the island of Phuket with the goal of organizing construction works to build concrete mould around the church's plot of land to protect the filled soil from washing out during the tropical rains season. The local parishioners actively shared deacon Daniel's enthusiasm and in a couple of days collected a donation in the sum of 140.000 Thai baht, that allowed fr. Daniel to hire a team of workers. Thai workers did not stay indifferent to the Christian fervour of their Orthodox compatriot, and, seeing that he often had to spend nights open-air in the building site, in a few days they build a temporary quarter for fr. Daniel during their free time. Deacon's wife Elena devotedly helps him with everything. The works are expected to have been finished before the planned date.

Representative of Russian Orthodox Church in Thailand hegumen Oleg (Cherepanin) stated his intention to visit Phuket in order to support fr. Daniel and Elena, as well as to express his gratitude to the parishioners and workers who help the Church at hard time.

The terms for church construction in Pattaya have been confirmed.

The terms for Church in the Name of All Saints' construction in Pattaya (Chonburi province) have been confirmed, and a contract has been signed. In particular, terms of contract provide for the following stages of construction:

• June 2009 – purchase of building materials, construction of temporary workers' quarters, other preparatory construction works.
• July 2009 – foundation construction, load-carrying structure of the ground floor, cement covering for the ground floor, load-carrying structure of the 1st floor.
• August 2009 – cement covering for the first floor, stair wells setup, cement covering for the second floor.
• September 2009 – bell tower construction, roofing.
• October 2009 – brick setting of the walls, plastering, door and window blocks setup, electric wiring.
• November 2009 – sanitary engineering, finishing work.
• The works are planned to be completed in December, 2009.

Ambassador of Romania in Thailand deceased.

On May the 28th, 2009, in his room the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania in Thailand Mr. Radu Gabriel Mateescu deceased on his 65th year. Upon receiving the mournful news, service for the dead was conducted at St. Nicholas the Wonder-Worker' Chapel in Bangkok.

Mr. Radu Gabriel Mateescu was well-known in Thailand's Orthodox community. He helped the church on numerous occasions.

On May the 30, Representative of Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) hegumen Oleg (Cherepanin), accompanied by the reader of St. Nicholas' Chapel monk Nicolas (Raicea), citizen of Romania, visited the Romanian embassy and left their records in the book of condolences.

On June the 2nd, at Mr. Radu Gabriel Mateescu's spouse's request, the clirics of St. Nicholas' Chapel will perform funeral service by the body of the deceased.

Bulgarian culture day in Thailand.

On Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Bulgaria in Thailand, Mr. Kamen Velichkov's invitation, Representative of Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) hegumen Oleg (Cheperanin) attended the opening ceremony of the art exhibition devoted to the day of Bulgarian culture. Special attention was paid to ancient Orthodox sacred objects of Bulgaria. Also, the outstanding role of the Holy and Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril and Methodius was mentioned, not only for the Bulgarians, but for all Slavic nations. Greeting Representative of Russian Orthodox Church, Mr. Ambassador particularly stated: «Our embassy in Thailand is small, but we'll do our best to support the Orthodox community in this country».

Extended session of the Orthodox Church in Thailand Committee

An extended session of the Orthodox Church in Thailand Committee took place. Representative of Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) hegumen Oleg (Cherepanin), members of the parish councils of Pattaya and Phuket also took part in the session. The main issue on the agenda was the first-priority directions of funding church projects in Thailand requiring the Orthodox Church Foundation's support. Representative of All-Saints parish of Pattaya insisted on the importance of funding the construction of a church in Pattaya, mainly basing his opinion on the high number of Orthodox believers at that parish and the preparedness of the construction documents. Another argument for Pattaya was statements that the beginning of construction would help unite the community and organize the collection of donations for other church projects in Thailand.

On the other hand, the Holy Life-Giving Trinity parish council of Phuket proved the necessity of funding projects on Phuket due to a complicated situation, because tropical rains washed the one-meter-high ground away from the plot of land, ruining the already completed work. To stop the destruction, it is necessary to install a mould all around the church's plot of land. That would cost up to 1,000,000 Thai baht.

After more than 4 hours of discussion and Chairman of the Orthodox Church in Thailand Committee's statement that the Foundation did not have enough money to fully support both directions (Pattaya and Phuket) simultaneously, it was decided to consider church construction in Pattaya as a top-priority direction, allocating up to 1,500,000 Thai baht by the Foundation on the initial stage of works. As far as the situation on Phuket is concerned, it was decided to send Chairman of the Orthodox Church in Thailand Committee deacon Daniel Wanna on a business trip to Phuket for a month, exempting him from responsibility for the divine service at St. Nicholas Chapel in Bangkok. Deacon Daniel Wanna, having both religious and technical background, was instructed to organize and lead works on setting up a mould all around the church's plot of land by non-contracted construction. The Orthodox Church in Thailand Committee allocated up to 200,000 Thai baht for those purposes, which may be sufficient due to that organization of works.

During the session regrets for shortening of donations for the church's needs were expressed, although it is understandable due to the world financial crisis. Until the completion the planned works in Pattaya and on Phuket, the Orthodox Church in Thailand Committee will stop funding social programs of the Foundation. Exceptional cases of social help on the account of the Foundation will be considered individually.

Nevertheless, educational and missionary activity of the Orthodox Church in Thailand will be funded on regular basis on the account of special-purpose donations and money of St. Nicholas' parish of Bangkok.

Financial means were offered for Russian citizen deportation.

Orthodox Church in Thailand Foundation considered Representative of Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) hegumen Oleg (Cherepanin)'s request to offer money to cover the deportation of a Russian citizen, who had stayed in the Immigration Prison of Thailand for more than 8 months. It was decided to allocate 24000 Thai baht for that purpose. After the meeting, Representative of the Foundation Committee - deacon Daniel Wanna - presented the respective cheque to vice-consul of Russian Federation in Thailand Mr. S. Popov.

Representation of Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) in the Kingdom of Thailand calls to all our fellow countrymen for adhering to the immigration rules and regulations in the Kingdom of Thailand and reminds that Thailand does not allow deportation using its federal budget. As well as consular rules in Russian Federation do not provide for allocating such sums of money for these purposes.

Attending the reception on the occasion of 25th anniversary of PP's visit.

On nuncio of Vatican in Thailand, arch-bishop Salvatore Pennacchio's invitation and Catholic Arch-bishop conference of Thailand, members of St. Nicholas' Parish in Bangkok council attended a photo exhibition and a ceremonial dinner dedicated to 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II's visit to the Kingdom of Thailand. As distinguished guests of local Catholic community, cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-Kiun, a special representative of Pope Benedict XVI, and other high-ranking Catholic officials were present during the ceremonies. On behalf of Thai government, the reception was attended by Minister of Thai Culture. Representative of Russian Orthodox Church in the Kingdom of Thailand, being unable to attend the reception in person during his pastoral trip across the country's provinces, conveyed through Dr. Vladimir Buntilov his warmest greetings and best wishes to everybody at the ceremony.
