Archimandrite Oleg (Cherepanin)'s appeal to non-church people about the victims of the fires in Russia.

REPRESENTATIVE OF THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH (Moscow Patriarchate) in Thailand

19 Sukhothai Soi 3, Sukhothai Road,
Dusit, 10300, Bangkok, Kingdom of Thailand.
Tel.+(66) 81-7325021

My beloved,

Today, I appeal to those who are not yet acculturated to the voice of the Church, those who might be indifferent or even blasphemes Her, mixing in her human and Divine. That does not matter to us. Yet you remain valuable to us, loved and dear; we pray and anticipate your entrance to the Father's home. Peace to you and blessings! It's not often I address you, brothers, - bear now my tough word.

Forgive me, for Christ's sake, but today I will say to you an impartial word. The trouble in Russia, the heat waves and fires have put many on the brink of survival, and revealed the strain of our souls, our spiritual sickness. To a certain extent, our guilt and our sin.

By the grace of God, the Orthodox Church in Thailand gathered and presented for the needs of victims of the fire, a considerable amount for our community - about. $ 10,000 U.S. However, this aid could be much greater. In an appeal to help, the people of faith, whose hearts have been softened by the Word of God, responded. This was not raising money for church purposes, but to help the victims, our compatriots regardless of religion, even atheists.

After all, we are one people, one nation, believers and non-believers. I would explain in a different way, we are members of the Church or un-churched. Because in difficult personal circumstances, every grief forgets his disbelief and rushes to the temple of God and the Lord do not reject. «For our generous Lord takes the last as the first; ... and last mercy, and cares about the first "(Catechetical word for Easter by St. John Chrysostom). Why was the tragedy not accepted by each of us as personal grief? Why we do not understand that the loss of our homes and the loss of our people, is tragic to our homeland!

Involved in our everyday bustle, we did not recognize that the fires in Russia not only burned our forests and villages, - but burn our conscience. The Apostle Paul, in his first letter to Timothy (4.1-2) refers to people with «burned consciences». Alas, sadly I have to talk about it, the conscience of many of us was «burned», unable to feel the pain and suffering of others.

In the current appeal, the question is not the value of the sum total - the question is about the participation, of belonging to a common need. But many are deaf to others' pain. I spend these days in Pattaya. And I remembered the Biblical scene, as it describes the worldwide flood, - «For as in the days before the flood they were eating and drinking... And knew not until the flood came »(Matthew 24:38-39).

I'm not even referring to the Holy Dormition Fast, limiting food and entertainment as the duty of the Orthodox, by baptism, the people who were once considered Holy Russia. But have we become filthy Russia, which knows no holidays or fast days? It appears yes! But do not want to accept this.

Yes, sin entered into the human nature. And at all times, man is spiritually fallen, but also capable of rising. With St. Paul, Orthodox believers lament his poignant words «Because I do not understand what I do: because I do not do what I want, but what I hate, that I do. ... Wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from this body of death?»(Romans Chapter 7).

Both then and now the fallen nature of man has not changed. Only now we have ceased to feel sin as sin, as a disease of the human soul, as a change in the normal state of our being. The modern tragedy is that sin is perceived as the norm, as a quite common condition that does not require any spiritual feats in combat. And we no longer seek God! We buried Him in the ground, and think only about the earthly.

Many have said to me - we do not believe that the money will reach the needy. I can only speak for the Church. All that was donated by the Church - every cent they received, went to the needy, was spent to combat the consequences of the tragedy and help fire victims. Words like these of no confidence are said, mostly out of the reluctance to share with our fellowmen.

Where are our Russian travel agents, widely advertising their services, where are our Russian restaurateurs, where are our Russian officials? Is it hard to give a small part of our labors? «Hardened heart ... has changed his mind ... clouded mind ...»- St. Ephrem the Syrian describes this state of human.

Many of our commercial companies without doubts digested themselves the name "Russian, Russian." But, obviously, the whole point of this is to more easily take money from the Russian people, without incurring any liability for such labeling. That is the impression.

Most of the collected donations is the money of ordinary people who gave not from their abundance, but at times, the last of it. There were no donations from commercial companies, at least through the Church. And where were they all? I personally know many of you and hold many in sincere respect. And it would be unfair to accuse you of greed, but here perhaps of spiritual carelessness, I should.

Too unpleasant a word I say to our tourists, do you drink and eat in fun? — fun when our homeland was moaning in pain when entire villages were burnt and ordinary people and our firefighters killed. When the whole world is involved in the fight with the fire in Russia and the country is helped by the U.S., Germany, Italy and many other countries - you do not hear the groans of your own people? And then I say - this roar and rage of the discos, the stinking fumes in strip bars — how to hear howls of the burned, despair of those who lost loved ones ...? We do not hear ourselves, perhaps.

Again I recall the Biblical story, when the patriarch Abraham accepted three angels in the form of pilgrims, going to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, whose sins reached the heavens. God was not willing to destroy these cities, if they could find at least ten righteous (Genesis 18:32), but there was not so many saints. And now in this place, once prosperous cities is bitterness near the Dead Sea, in which nothing lives. Each time at Sunday service in Pattaya, I shudder to look out of the Royal Doors to the worshipers - can we find these ten people, for whom the Lord will have mercy on this city? While there is! For now, brethren! The depth of sin is infinite. And not our business is the reason, but the spiritual negligence.

God tested us. Experienced to be called human beings, children of God. Do we stand this test? The answer may be very heavy. Let everyone answer it himself.

But there is still time. The Church specified three Sundays, when we collect for the present tragedy. There is the last opportunity - the last Sunday. Remember, even today the words of Scripture «judgment without mercy hath shewed no mercy» (James II, 13). Come, stretch out a hand to those who need it, remember those who lost their property by fire. Help them. And God will remmber your good deeds on the Last Day.

Again forgive me for Christ’s sake, I say all this out of my true love for you and my care for the salvation of your souls. May my words will be bitter medicine as prescribed by a doctor for our healing.

With prayer for you,

Unworthy archimandrite Oleg (Cherepanin),
The Representative of the Russian Orthodox Church
(Moscow Patriarchate) in Thailand.

Authorization for the Representative of the Russian Orthodox Church in Thailand for pastoral care for Uzbek prisoners.

In response to numerous requests for Orthodox Christian pastoral care from citizens of Uzbekistan, mostly ethnic Russian, who are incarcerated in the Kingdom of Thailand, the Representative of the Russian Orthodox Church (MP) in Thailand, archimandrite Oleg (Cherepanin) submitted a letter to the Consulate General of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Thailand Mr. S. Ikramov requesting a formal diplomatic note for the police authorities of the Kingdom so that the Representative of the Russian Orthodox Church in Thailand could visit prisoners of Uzbek citizens, providing them with the necessary pastoral care. In a telephone conversation, and later in the official letter of the Consul General of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Thailand, Mr. S. Ikramov granted the appropriate authority to the Representative of the Russian Orthodox Church through the diplomatic mission of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Thailand. Moreover, Mr. S. Ikramov thanked the Orthodox Church for the pastoral care of Uzbek citizens and said that he sent a formal letter to the Central Penitentiary of Bangkok with the required notice. Mr. S. Ikramov in a letter to Fr. Oleg also expressed his appreciation for the cooperation and assistance to the citizens of Uzbekistan in difficult circumstances, and expressed his hope for further cooperation in promoting universal values.

It should be noted that the Representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church in Thailand has a long-standing good relations the Consulate General of Uzbekistan in Thailand. The Representation of the Russian Orthodox Church has received assistance from the official Uzbek diplomatic mission for helping the citizens of the Republic. Despite the formal difference in religious beliefs, Representatives of the Orthodox Church in the country always were supported by the Consulate General of Uzbekistan in the pastoral ministry. The Russian Orthodox Church in the providing assistance to the needy, especially the citizens of the former Soviet Union, does not make any preference on the basis of religion. The main criteria for such assistance are the health of prisoners held for the duration of detention, whether they have children and a number of other objective factors.

Archimandrite Oleg (Cherepanin), Representative of the Russian Orthodox Church in Thailand expressed his sincere thanks to Mr. S. Ikramov for his support and understanding.

Meeting of the of the Orthodox Church in Thailand Foundation Committee concerning foreign refugees.

The Representative of the Russian Orthodox Church in Thailand archimandrite Oleg (Cherepanin) held a meeting with members of the Orthodox Christian Church Foundation in Thailand, the parish councils of churches, as well as active parishioners of St. Nicholas parish in Bangkok, devoted to the problem of refugees. In particular, archimandrite Oleg said: “recently, the St. Nicholas Chapel in Bangkok was directly affected by the problems of refugees. More than a dozen people, most from the poorest countries of Africa, Eritrea, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia attended services at the Orthodox Church in Bangkok. They consider themselves Orthodox Christians, though, in fact, belong to the Monophysite churches. Theologically, they do not understand the difference between the Monophysites and the canonical Orthodox. Of course, as long as they are not received by the Orthodox Church, we cannot share with them in the Holy Eucharist. This is an opportunity to try to explain the differences between the teachings of their church from the Orthodox Church. But we also have responsibility for spiritual assistance and material support».

Arriving in Thailand, they received from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Bangkok in their passports proper identification, however, the refugees soon find themselves in a bind. The terms expire and the passport becomes invalid. A certificate of refugee status does not work in Thailand. Moreover, children of refugees have no access to education, thus forfeiting their future. Help depends on the UN to provide a small room to live on the outskirts of Bangkok and a cash grant not exceeding 6,000 baht (about $ 200) per family, which is very insufficient for living in Thailand.

Following discussion, it was decided to organize a meeting of the Representative of the Orthodox Church in Thailand and Chairman of the Orthodox Church in Thailand Foundation with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Bangkok in order to clarify all aspects of the problem. It was also decided to contact with community-based organizations in Thailand to discuss the problem. After a thorough understanding of the issues, specific decisions and possible help for refugees can be considered.
