Representative of Russian Orthodox Church in Thailand hegumen Oleg (Cherepanin) was on a pastoral visit to Pattaya.
Representative of Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) in Thailand hegumen Oleg (Cherepanin) visited Pattaya resort during the period from 30th of November to 2nd of December. Several hundred of Orthodox believers live in Pattaya, where also rest numerous tourists from Russia and CIS, who mostly are Orthodoxes as well. Although periodical divine service in Pattaya has been conducted for several years, only this year the believers have legalized their status by creating in this city an Orthodox parish in the name of all saints under the jurisdiction of The Most Holy Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II.
At present, by His Eminence Kirill, Metropolitan of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, Chairman of Church External Relations Department of Moscow Patriatchate's blessing, the community is considering the question of land parcel purchase for Orthodox chapel construction. During his visit, hegumen Oleg (Cherepanin) met the members of Othodox community's parish council in Pattaya, and examined some plots of land suggested for the purchase. The best one, according to Representative of Russian Orthodox Church, is the parcel in Pratamnak Hill district, which is a junction of some kind of the north and the south part of the city. All the suggestions of Pattaya's parish in the name of all saints, as well as Russian Orthodox Church Representative's opinion, will be directed to Orthodox Church in Thailand Foundation, the committee of which must examine during its session all the legal and financial aspects of this project, and start to carry it out.
Also hegumen Oleg acquainted himself with the current situation in the Uttapao airport, which is the only functional airport in Thailand at the moment, from where they forward the tourists who are in a difficult situation related to political riots in the Kingdom. The airport is functioning in an emergency mode. Representatives of Russian airlines and tour operators are trying their best to help the tourist solve the problems and provide for the quickest flight possible. In the airport, practically 24 hours a day, representatives of Russian Embassy are assisting the tourists in resolving their issues with the government and getting their flight quick. The same can be said about the actions of Ukrainian airlines' employees and Ukrainian Embassy in Thailand. During the conversation with Russian tourists, Representative of Russian Orthodox Church in Thailand called upon them to stay calm, reasonable and to control themselves. On a later meeting with Russian Vice-Council in Thailand S. Popov, hegumen Oleg brought his assessment of the situation to the attention of Russian consulate, as well as informed them about tourists' claims.
