According to police, a young man of medium height, slim build, presumably by Kavkaz origin, who was wearing a black jacket and blue jeans came to the church. In the presence of parishioners he loudly asked for the rector by name. When Father came out, the attacker shot him in the head and chest with a 9 mm pistol. The rector of the church died on the spot, while his assistant was severely wounded. The priest and his assistant were taken to a nearby hospital by parishioners. All police groups and traffic patrols were notified about the offender. At the scene was Anatoly Bagmet, the head of the Investigation Department of Public Prosecutor's Office of Russia, Moscow.
"RIA Novosti" news agency reported, Anatoly Bagmet, the head of the Investigation Department of Public Prosecutor's Office of Russia, Moscow stated the basic motivation of the murder was on religious grounds. The source of "Interfax" added that recently fr. Daniel, had received threats by phone and e-mail about the physical violence from some extremist organization, which is why an appeal was made to the FSB. "The latest threat came to Sysoyev in early October. The agency said, an unknown caller said that he was sentenced to death". According to another version, Father could have been killed by members of the sect of so-called "rodnovery" pagans. As established by the investigators, shortly before the crime the killer rang fr. Daniel’s mobile phone to determine whether he would be in the church.
Fr. Daniil Sysoev was known as a theologian, who constantly disputed extremist Islamic trends. He authored such works as "The Marriage to a Muslim" and "The Orthodox Response to Islam." Fr. Daniel founded a school in Moscow, supported street preachers, as well as helping in the organization of the same school in Saratov, Ulyanovsk and Murmansk. He first began to receive threats four years ago after a public dispute with the former Orthodox priest Vyacheslav Polosin, who accepted Islam. Fr. Daniel Sysoev is survived by his wife and three children. The Church of St. Thomas is considered temporary. It is on the future site of the temple of the Prophet Daniel in Kantemirovskaya.

Fr. Daniel Sysoev was a great friend of the Orthodox Church in Thailand, providing all possible assistance in the development of the missionary activity of the parishes. In December 2009, he was expected to visit Thailand. True to his missionary calling, he had asked to arrange a trip to the north of the Kingdom, where he wanted to arrange a series of missionary meetings with local people to speak to students at Thai universities. However, the Lord judged otherwise.
The representative of the Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), the Orthodox Christian Church in Thailand Foundation, the church councils of St. Nicholas, Holy Trinity, All Saints, Holy Dormition and Holy Ascension parishes express their deepest condolences to the parish, family, relatives and friends of fr. Daniel. Lord give rest to his soul with the Saints.
In the morning, November 20, 2009 at St. Nicholas Church in Bangkok a memorial service was performed for the deceased priest Daniel. In his speech after the memorial, hegumen Oleg (Cherepanin), representative of the Russian Orthodox Church said: “As humans we mourn the life tragically cut short of one of the greatest missionaries of the Russian Orthodox Church, but by our faith - we rejoice because Christ has conquered death! Because in fr. Daniel we had a decent church missionary, but now he may be a saint. And those who inflicted the wound upon the Church, in spite of his thinking to extinguish the preaching of the Word of God, did not know the mystery of the Church: "The blood of martyrs is the seed of the Church." The death of fr. Daniel should motivate more priests to be missionaries. This shows the world truth of Orthodoxy, which is still by the Cross of Christ, heavy, but the only saving way».
Eternal memory and the everlasting peace in Christ to His minister priest Daniil Sysoev.
